Netflix cancels 'The Brothers Sun' after a single season
Netflix has cancelled its action-comedy series 'The Brothers Sun' after one season. The decision comes despite the show spending five weeks in the streamer's Top 10 rankings.

The cancellation
Netflix has cancelled the action-comedy series 'The Brothers Sun' after a single eight-episode season, the streamer confirmed. The series, which premiered on January 4, will not return for a second installment. The show was co-created by Brad Falchuk, known for co-creating the 2009 Fox series 'Glee', and Byron Wu.
Starring recent Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh alongside Justin Chien and Sam Song Li, 'The Brothers Sun' followed a Taipei gangster who travels to Los Angeles to protect his mother and younger brother after his triad boss father is assassinated. The series debuted to positive critical reception and found a significant initial audience, spending five weeks on Netflix's Top 10 list for English-language TV series. It peaked at the number two position and accumulated 30.2 million total views in its first two weeks, according to Netflix data.
A competitive renewal landscape
Despite its strong start, the series' viewership reportedly did not maintain the growth trajectory necessary to secure a renewal. Netflix's renewal decisions are famously data-driven, weighing viewership and completion rates against a show's production budget. While the series was popular, it failed to reach the viewership heights of other recent Netflix series like 'The Night Agent' or 'Beef', the latter of which became a major awards contender for the platform.
The cancellation underscores the high bar for success at the streamer, where even critically appreciated shows with solid viewership can be cut if they do not meet specific internal metrics for audience engagement and growth. The decision leaves the storyline, which ended on a cliffhanger, unresolved. Falchuk served as showrunner on the first season, which was produced by his Brad Falchuk Teley-Vision banner as part of his overall deal with Netflix.
