M-Appeal closes Cannes deals for ‘Downtown’ and other titles

A key North American sale

Berlin-based world sales company M-Appeal has closed multiple international distribution deals following this year's Cannes Film Market, securing a North American buyer for the Dutch drama "Downtown." The film, from director Michiel van Erp, was acquired by Dark Star Pictures, a distributor known for its catalog of independent genre and arthouse titles. The deal signals continued market appetite for specialized European cinema.

M-Appeal launched sales for "Downtown" at the Marché du Film, the industry-focused market that runs concurrently with the Cannes Film Festival. The acquisition by Dark Star Pictures ensures the film will receive a theatrical or streaming release in the United States and Canada, though a specific timeline has not yet been announced. Details of additional sales stemming from the market were also confirmed by the company.

Further international agreements

Alongside the "Downtown" sale, M-Appeal finalized agreements for other titles on its international slate. The company reported new deals for “The Garden We Dreamed,” the latest feature from Mexican director Joaquín del Paso, and “Truly Naked,” a film by Muriel d’Ansembourg.

While M-Appeal did not disclose the specific territories or buyers for these two films, the announcement confirms broad interest in its catalog beyond the headline sale to North America. The successful dealmaking out of Cannes represents a positive result for the European sales agency as it continues to place international features with regional distributors worldwide.
