Erin Moriarty currently stars as Annie January, or Starlight, in Prime Video's successful superhero satire [The Boys](/show/the-boys). Before that breakout performance, however, the actress held a significant recurring role in the first season of HBO's celebrated crime anthology [True Detective](/show/true-detective).

Moriarty's appearance in the 2014 series, which was led by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, was an early career highlight. It placed her inside one of the most critically discussed television events of its year.

Her defining role

As one of the central figures in The Boys, which premiered in 2019, Moriarty portrays a superhero who becomes disillusioned with the corrupt, corporate-controlled world of powered individuals. Her character arc is integral to the series' narrative, which deconstructs superhero tropes. The show, soon to enter its fifth season, has become a flagship property for Prime Video and cemented Moriarty's status as a recognizable star in genre television.

Her performance has anchored some of the show's most dramatic storylines, navigating the moral complexities of a world where public heroes are often private villains. The role has required Moriarty to balance action sequences with nuanced character work, making Starlight a fan-favorite figure in the ensemble.

The True Detective connection

Five years prior to the launch of The Boys, Moriarty appeared in three episodes of True Detective's first season. She played Audrey Hart, the rebellious and troubled teenage daughter of detective Martin Hart, portrayed by Woody Harrelson. While not a lead, her character was woven into the season's dark, atmospheric plot, contributing to the sense of domestic unease that defined Hart's personal life.

Her scenes opposite Harrelson highlighted the detective's frayed family connections, which ran parallel to the central murder investigation. The role gave Moriarty exposure in a prestige HBO drama that would go on to win five Primetime Emmy Awards, positioning her for more prominent roles in projects like Jessica Jones and her eventual lead part in The Boys.
