Warner Bros. and Marvel Studios have scheduled major superhero releases for the same late September 2026 weekend, creating a direct box office conflict for a new Batman film and an untitled X-Men project. The scheduling decision places two of the most valuable IPs in modern cinema in direct competition, a rare occurrence this far in advance on the release calendar.

The initial date was claimed by Warner Bros. for an untitled DC event film, now identified as a project within the universe established by director Matt Reeves' 2022 film The Batman. Marvel Studios, led by president Kevin Feige, subsequently placed its own untitled feature on the same weekend. Sources close to the studio confirm the project is the highly anticipated MCU introduction of the X-Men, with Wolverine expected to play a central role.

A scheduling conflict

Direct scheduling standoffs between superhero tentpoles are uncommon. Typically, one studio moves its release to avoid cannibalizing the opening weekend audience for both films. The most notable recent example occurred in 2016, when Warner Bros. moved Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice away from a shared date with Marvel's Captain America: Civil War.

That this conflict has been set nearly two years out suggests a strategic gambit from both sides. It signals a new level of confidence from DC Studios, now run by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, and a declarative statement from Marvel about the strength of its post-Avengers properties. This particular Batman film exists as an "Elseworlds" story, separate from the primary DC Universe slate, while the X-Men film will integrate the characters into the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time.

Stakes for both studios

The September release window itself is a strategic choice. Traditionally viewed as a quieter box office period, it has recently hosted major hits like the It franchise. By planting their flags here, both studios are attempting to establish a new anchor weekend outside the crowded summer and holiday corridors.

For Warner Bros., the move reinforces its commitment to director-led, distinct cinematic universes alongside its interconnected DCU. For Marvel, it marks the official beginning of a new era for one of its most beloved properties, recently reacquired in the 21st Century Fox merger and teased in projects like [Deadpool & Wolverine](/movie/deadpool-wolverine-2024-533535), which brings back Hugh Jackman for a 2024 release.
